What exactly does Head of Household mean?

I have nothing against gay people. I have had several friends who are gay throughout my life and have some now. And while I don't agree with gay marriage I have nothing against people fighting for what they believe should be their rights. So if I have gay friends one would wonder why I am against gay marriage. I've been raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. Some may consider that to be very narrow-minded but it's my feeling and I'm entitled to it. Now, this is the part you'll probably find really strange. The thing that upset me most about the possibility of gay marriage being recognized as equal to male/female marriage is that it means that I will be discriminated against and no one wants to be discriminated against. Technically speaking this discrimination already exists but the recognition of gay marriage simply means that I fall one more place back in line.

Let me explain. I am single. Whether by my choosing or because I have yet to find the 'right' mate, I am single. For tax purposes I am single. As a single person I am in the highest tax bracket. I think I'm the head of my household. Who cares that my household is a household of one, it is still my household and I am the head of it. Yet I cannot claim head of household on my tax. Once gay marriage is recognized as equivalent to traditional marriage they will be able to claim married tax status, which means their taxes, as married or married filing separately, will now be less than mine. With less tax income the government, states and counties may be prompted to increase taxes to make up for the difference. So who pays more? Me, the single taxpayer. I get the even shorter end of the stick.

So how do I handle this?
Just as gay people as fighting for their rights its time for those of us who have single person households to fight for head of household status. Whether by choice or circumstance my household is a household of one and I am the head of it. If you are single and living at home, yes you are a single taxpayer. But if you pay the rent or mortage and other bills in your home then it is your household and you deserve head of household status and so do I. It's on!
